Course Overview
As mobile networks migrate from 2G to 3G to 4G/LTE and customers use their mobile devices to check email, browse the web, upload pictures, download music or video and update social media sites, there is an increasing demand for more bandwidth on the backhaul links between base stations and the network edge. Historically, backhaul has been based on E1 circuits, but there is a clear migration toward IP/Ethernet.  Since cell-size is decreasing and fiber is driven deeper into the network, an attractive option is then to use GPON as a backhauling technology to/from base stations.  This course provides an overview of the backhaul, its evolution, and discusses the backhaul solutions with GPON.
